Random Partner Generator: Match People Into Partners
Mark a captain by putting a * before the name, like *Sam.
Your teams will appear here.
A random partner generator matches a list of names into random partners in one click. Paste your names, generate, and everyone gets a partner. If the count is odd, one group of three forms so nobody sits alone. Reroll to rotate partners across rounds as often as you need.
You’ve got your partners on screen. Here’s how odd numbers work and the controls that help you rotate fairly.
How to match partners in two steps
- Add your names. One per line or comma-separated. Repeats and extra spaces get removed.
- Generate. Everyone gets a partner. Reroll for a new match-up, or set rules first to keep people together or apart.
Here’s 10 people matched into 5 partner pairs:
Team 1
- Ava
- Ben
Team 2
- Hugo
- Isla
Team 3
- Diego
- Jack
Team 4
- Finn
- Ella
Team 5
- Chloe
- Grace
Odd numbers, handled
When you have an odd number, clean pairs aren’t possible, so the tool forms one trio rather than leaving a person without a partner. Seven people become two pairs and one group of three. The tool shows you which three are grouped.
Prefer to have someone sit out instead? Remove a name before generating, and rotate who sits each round.
Controls for fair rotation
Reroll each round. Draw a fresh set of partners without retyping your list. Because each draw is independent, partners shift from round to round.
Keep-apart. Stop two people being partnered. Use it to guarantee someone gets a new partner next round instead of the same one.
Keep-together. Lock a specific match, like a mentor with a mentee, so it holds no matter how you reroll.
Export and share. Copy the partners, download a CSV, or share a link that reopens the same matches.
Where partner matching helps
Teachers running think-pair-share, peer editing, or a buddy system. The classroom group generator covers bigger student groups. Trainers pairing people for role-play. Coaches setting drill partners. Dance or language classes rotating who works with whom.
For pairs framed as pairs rather than partners, the random pair generator is the same tool. Need groups of three or more? Use the group maker. For full teams, the team generator handles it.
Why the matches are fair
The tool uses a Fisher-Yates shuffle, the standard unbiased method where every ordering is equally likely, then pairs names off the shuffled list two at a time. No match is favoured. Keep-together and keep-apart rules apply first, and the rest are matched at random around them.
Everything runs in your browser, so the names you paste stay on your device. An impossible rule triggers a clear warning rather than a wrong result.
Frequently asked questions
How does the random partner generator work?
Paste your list and generate. The tool shuffles everyone with an unbiased Fisher-Yates method, then matches them into partners two at a time. An odd number produces one group of three. You can reroll for a fresh set of partners, and set keep-together or keep-apart rules before you run it.
Can I make sure people get a new partner each round?
Yes. Add the previous partners to keep-apart before you reroll, and the tool won’t match them again. For a simpler approach, just reroll each round. Because every draw is random and independent, most people naturally get a different partner without any extra setup.
What if I have an odd number of people?
The tool forms one group of three so no one is left without a partner. So 9 people become three pairs and one trio, and you’ll see who’s in the trio. If you’d rather one person sit out each round, remove a name and rotate who’s out across rounds.
Is it free and private?
Yes. It’s free with no account and no limit on generations, and it runs entirely in your browser. The names you paste never get uploaded and stay on your device, so it’s safe with real student or staff names. The privacy policy explains what’s collected and what isn’t.
