What happens with an odd number

An odd list can’t split into clean twos, so the tool makes one trio instead of leaving someone unpaired. Nine people become three pairs and one group of three. You’ll see which three ended up together.

If you’d rather have a person sit out than form a trio, just remove a name before generating and rotate who sits each round.

Controls that make pairing easier

Keep-together. Pin two people who should be partners no matter what. Useful for a reading buddy or a mentor match you’ve already decided.

Keep-apart. Stop two people from being paired. Handy when two friends turn every partner task into a chat.

Reroll. Draw a whole new set of pairs without retyping. Great for rotating partners across several rounds so nobody’s stuck with the same person.

How the pairing stays fair

The tool shuffles your list with Fisher-Yates, a standard method where every ordering is equally likely, then walks down the shuffled list matching names two at a time. No pairing is favoured. Keep-together and keep-apart rules apply first, then the rest are matched at random around them.

Everything runs in your browser, so the names you paste never leave your device. If a rule can’t be met, you get a plain warning instead of a wrong result.
